Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church holds its last service.
October 10, 2004
Five minutes after pastor Francis de Sales Paolo delivers the sermon. a 100-year-old statue of the Virgin Mary topples over on the altar. Commenting on the closing of the church by the Catholic Archdiocese of Boston, parishioner Gina Scalcione, asks, “How do you evict God?” Parishioners go on to occupy the church save the parish for the next seven years, but the archdiocese changes the locks on the building on April 18, 2012, a Vatican court denies the parishioners’ final appeal to reopen the church in 2014, and the church is sold in 2015 and subsequently converted into condominiums.
